Riga, 25 May 2015. On Tuesday, May 26th, the Minister of Welfare Mr. Uldis Augulis will open  the meeting of the Senior Labour Inspectors Committee (SLIC) which will consists of a thematic day titled „Effective Labour Inspection Interaction: Control versus Advice” and also host the 68th plenary meeting which will deal with important working environment supervision issues.  

The event which is organized by the European Commission in collaboration with the State Labour Inspectorate will contain a discussion on the work methods practiced by diverse work environment supervision and control authorities aimed at the creation and maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment. The stakeholders will analyze national labour inspectorates’ possibilities of providing counselling to employers and employees and, if necessary, enforce most suitable coercive measures to achieve compliance with the applicable statutory labour protection requirements.   

The Senior Labour Inspectors Committee was set up by the European Commission’s decision for the purpose of identifying, analyzing and solving practical issues which are related to the implementation of legislative requirements dealing with occupational health and safety at work. The thematic day is a regular event of the SLIC meeting, during which the labour inspectors commonly discuss some topical sector issue selected by the presiding country and approved by the European Commission.

The event will be attended by the senior labour inspectors of EU and EEA member states, likewise by the representatives of the EC Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, European Agency for Safety and Health at Work and other international organizations.

The meeting is organized within the framework of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and is co-financed by the European Commission (EaSi-PROGRESS Program 2015). The meeting of SLIC will be held in Riga at the premises of the National Library of Latvia at Street Mukusalas 3.
